As the first music release from Melbourne-based artist and producer THERADIOMUSICOLA, ‘Cos We’re Girls’ arrives with excitement and enthusiasm driving each tempo and hook with serious punch, and backed up by some incredibly slick production. Born from a love of powered up pop and rock music, the first single from the artist gives the audience an insight into the wide bed of influences that drives this project. 

 

'Cos We're Girls' is an exciting first step from the prolific Melbourne multi-instrumentalist and artist. While the track delivers an infectious fun energy, it also packs a serious message, hinting at the depth and ambition behind the project. At the same time, it builds a sense of mystery and anticipation around the artist and what lies ahead. One of the song's most captivating elements is its female vocalist, whose identity remains undisclosed. Despite her anonymity, her charismatic performance forms the emotional and musical heart of the track.

 

“...The original concept for the verse melody came to me as I was listening to the rhythm track. I needed something vocally that was as powerful as the music underneath it! And that’s when the lyrics formed with the idea of confronting social norms and power dynamics in society. And just on that, I also want to acknowledge the incredible vocal performances on this track. It was a total blast in the studio working with this Australian based singer! We were both so “in tune" with the sentiment of the song, that the vocals went down in record time - and there's lots of them”  THERADIOMUSICOLA

 

Recorded at THERADIOMUSICOLASTUDIO with the guitar tracking being done at SCREAM LOUDER Studio with musician/producer Reggie Bowman (Southern Sons), The song was then mixed by engineer/producer Ricki Rae (Taxiride/Baby Animals)

The song itself, written from a female’s perspective, is at its core about empowerment and breaking down stereotypes and social barriers that young people often experience in relationships especially when there’s inequality in social classes and standing. The verse is delivered with unrelenting drive and punch as the protagonist states her claim that she won’t be belittled or spoken down to in any way, and here, she stands up for anyone that has had those experiences.  

 

Working with videographer David Mijahlov on the visuals for 'Cos We're Girls', THERADIOMUSICOLA realised that his idea for the story behind the song was being interpreted and fleshed out in ways he didn’t even anticipate would be possible. David brought the vision to life through the performance of the actress featured in the video - rather than the singer. Here, the imagery is of freedom and liberation and being comfortable in your own skin, but also showing moments of vulnerableness and reflection.

THERADIOMUSICOLA has had a long and successful career in the Australian pop and rock scene, inspired by the likes of Max Martin, Kate Bush, Cheap Trick and Radiohead - all speaking to his diverse love for music. Having performed with a number of Australia’s premier vocalists including Bonnie Anderson, Rhys Tolhurst, and Jacob Butler the musician has also co-written songs with his own RADIODOGS and Country band The Open Road spanning genres including pop, indie, rock and acoustic rock.

 

‘Cos We’re Girls’ is his first release as a solo artist and an exciting taste of what is still to come!
